More bankruptcies in June

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), there were 37 more bankruptcies declared in June than in May, marking an 11% increase. In the first half of 2024, there were 40% more bankruptcies compared to the same period the previous year. The number of bankruptcies was also higher than in the same period of the last three years before the pandemic (2017-2019).

Rising number of bankruptcies
The number of bankruptcies fluctuates significantly, with rapid decreases and increases. The peak number of bankruptcies was 911 in May 2013, after which the number decreased until August 2017. The trend remained relatively flat until mid-2020, after which the number of bankruptcies further decreased, reaching a record low of 109 in August 2021. Since May 2022, the number of bankruptcies has been consistently higher than in the same month a year earlier.

Most bankruptcies in construction
In June, 349 companies and institutions (including sole proprietorships) were declared bankrupt. The construction industry had the highest number of bankruptcies, with 54, which is a 29% increase from May this year.

Construction is one of the industries with the most companies. Relatively speaking, the hospitality sector had the highest number of bankruptcies in June, followed by trade (48) and specialized business services (48).

Slight increase in retail bankruptcies
In the Dutch retail sector, 22 companies went bankrupt in June, 2 more than the previous month. This included companies in the categories of ‘supermarkets and department stores’, ‘food stores’, and ‘other household goods stores’. A recreational goods store was also declared bankrupt, and 3 stores in other categories closed their doors.

June had the highest number of bankruptcies since June 2020, the first year of the pandemic. In the first 6 months of this year, 164 retail companies went bankrupt, also the highest number since 2020, when there were 193 bankruptcies.
