Fewer insolvencies in April and May

Compared with the same period last year, fewer companies were declared bankrupt in April and May. The bankruptcy rate was also lower in both months than a year earlier.

In April, after adjustment for the number of court sitting days, 293 companies were declared bankrupt, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS). While March still showed an increase in bankruptcies compared with the previous year, April recorded 39 fewer bankruptcies than in the same period a year earlier, a decline of 12 percent. Compared with March, the number of bankruptcies decreased by 3 percent.

In May, after adjustment for the number of court sitting days, 287 companies were declared bankrupt. This was 66 fewer bankruptcies than in the same period a year earlier, a decline of 19 percent. Compared with April, the number of bankruptcies fell by 1 percent.

Bankruptcy rate

The bankruptcy rate stood at 7.9 in April. One year earlier, 9.1 out of every 100,000 companies were declared bankrupt.

In May, the bankruptcy rate came to 7.7, compared with 9.6 a year earlier.

Since the start of the series in 2015, the bankruptcy rate peaked at 24.8 in March 2015. It then began to decline, reaching a record low of 3.4 in August 2021. Subsequently, the number of bankruptcies per 100,000 companies increased again until 2024. After that, the bankruptcy rate remained stable until the autumn of 2024. Since then, the trend has been slightly downward.

Highest bankruptcy rate in transport and storage in both months

Without adjustment for the number of court sitting days, the transport and storage sector recorded the highest relative number of bankruptcies in both April and May.

Per 100,000 companies in the transport and storage sector, 28.6 companies went bankrupt in April and 22.6 in May. One year earlier, these figures were 27.7 and 25.3 respectively.
